Airports And General Information - Washington Dulles (KIAD), Reagan National (KDCA)

First, when flying with Washington Center, you need to know what airports I provide "Full Service" to. Full service means if there is no ground or tower controller on, I will fill the position, as well as center, approach control, and so on. The airports I presently service are: KIAD, KDCA, KBWI, KADW, KRIC, KCHO, KRDU and KORF. KIAD, KDCA and KBWI are the primary and preferred airports. The departure procedures used at KIAD are the capital5 and the pryme2 (RNAV). The primary STARS used are the the Royil2(West arrivals), the Coatt4 (South arrivals), the Delro1 ( East arrivals), and the Philipsburg1 (North Arrivals). Other STARS are available and may be used. STARS used at KDCA are the Irons4 (South arrivals), Ojay1 (South arrivals, RNAV), Natnl1 (Noth arrivals (RNAV), Eldee2 (West arrivals (RNAV), Bilit1 (East arrivals (RNAV), and the Wizrrd1 (West Arrivals). All SIDS, STARS and approach plates can be found by clicking on the charts link to the left.

Planning Your Flight

Now that you know what airports would be best to fly into, lets begin planning your flight. It is always best to file with SIDS and STARS. You can visit the flight planning center to the left to select a flight, search for a certain route and even download the complete flight plan in Microsoft word for reference. At the very least ensure you always provide at least 1 initial VOR or fix for vectoring in your flight plan.

The flight planning center to the left can be very helpful. You can quickly select a flight, download the flight plan and print it out for use!! There are currently 55 flight plans for KIAD, 22 flight plans for KDCA and 19 flight plans for KBWI in the flight planning center.
115 total flight plans for many major airports available!

Starting The Game

It is best to connect to the server at the airport you intend to depart from and in the aircraft you intend to fly. Then you can file your flight plan. Ensure to file the for a proper flight level. See here. Once you have filed your flight plan, you request your clearance to your destination. ALWAYS have pen and paper to write down what the ATC issues to you. When receiving your clearance, you are listening for 5 items. 1 - How you are cleared to your destination. (IE: via the cap5 departure) 2 - Initial flight level or altitude. 3 - Expected final FL or AL. 4 - departure frequency. 5 - Squawk code. You must copy all these items, read back correctly, and enter the assigned squawk code in your radio.

Pushing back and starting your flight

Once you have provided a correct read back the ATC will issue instructions on pushing back and will tell you to call for taxi. Once you call for taxi you will be issued instructions to the runway, the current surface wind and the altimeter. Unless instructed to do so, leave your transponder (your squawk) on standby until reaching the departure runway. If you are instructed to squawk normal, simply turn your Squawk Win device to "On". NOTE: You do not indent or turn on your transponder via your radio in the aircraft, use Squawk win!

DcVirtual TeamSpeak

Take-Off and In-Flight

Once you are at the assigned runway let the ATC know you are short of the runway, ready for departure. The ATC will provide further instructions from here. Once airborne and if instructed to contact another ATC, you will change to the frequency given on your radio stack. If you are leaving the airspace, you will be instructed to contact the next center, if online or to switch to unicom. When switching to unicom your teamspeak will be closed and you will be text only at this point. NOTE: If you receive a message that an ATC is in range, this does not mean to contact them. The ATC will text you when they are ready to talk to you.
